This notice explains how this website handles your personal information, in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Who is responsible for your information

The responsible party for this website under POPIA is Dr Annabel Davies. The responsible party decides why and how personal information is processed on this website. The information officer is Dr Davies, who is the contact point for privacy questions and requests and can be reached at brsman@mweb.co.za, marked for her attention.

What the enquiry form collects, and why

If you use the enquiry form on this website, it asks for your name, a mobile number, your preferred day and time to be contacted, and an optional note. This information is collected so that Dr Annabel Davies can get in touch with you to arrange or discuss an appointment.

The form asks you not to include any medical details in the note. Health information needs stronger protection under POPIA than most other personal information, so please describe a dental problem when you are contacted, rather than writing it on the form.

Dr Annabel Davies processes the information you submit through the enquiry form on the basis of your consent. You give this consent by ticking the consent box and submitting the form. You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting the information officer, although this does not affect anything already done with your information while your consent applied.

Who else processes your information

Netlify, Inc., which hosts this website and operates its enquiry form, processes the information you submit on behalf of Dr Annabel Davies. Under POPIA, Netlify does this as an operator, which means it may process your information only on instructions and only for the purpose it was collected for. The written contract POPIA requires for this is Netlify’s Data Processing Agreement, which forms part of Netlify’s terms of service and applies to the account through which SWELL Digital manages this website (Netlify, Inc., 2023 Updates to Netlify Terms and Conditions, netlify.com/blog/2023-terms-conditions, accessed 25 September 2026).

Netlify is based in the United States. Its privacy policy says that personal data may be collected, transferred to and stored outside the country where it was collected, so your enquiry is stored on a server outside South Africa once you submit it. POPIA allows a transfer like this where the party receiving the information is bound by a law, binding corporate rules, or a written agreement that requires substantially the same standard of protection that POPIA itself requires (Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013, section 72(1)(a)). The Data Processing Agreement mentioned above is that written agreement, and Netlify’s privacy policy states that it uses contractual safeguards of this kind, including standard contractual clauses, when it moves personal data across borders (Netlify, Inc., Privacy Policy, netlify.com/privacy, accessed 21 September 2026).

Every form submission is also checked for spam by Akismet, a spam-filtering service that Netlify uses automatically on all form submissions to this site (Netlify, Inc., Forms: Spam filters, docs.netlify.com/forms/spam-filters, accessed 21 September 2026). A submission that Akismet flags as spam is kept apart from genuine enquiries within Netlify’s system.

When you submit the form, an email notifying Dr Annabel Davies of your enquiry is sent to the practice’s shared mailbox, brsman@mweb.co.za, which is read by reception. Its subject line marks the enquiry as being for Dr Davies. The mailbox is an email account with MWEB, which stores the email on its own systems.

A copy of each enquiry is also sent to SWELL Digital, the agency that maintains this website, which acts as an operator under POPIA in the same way as Netlify. SWELL Digital’s email is provided by Google, through Google Workspace. This copy currently stays in place, and this notice will be updated if that arrangement changes. SWELL Digital handles this copy under a written operator agreement with Dr Davies.

How long your information is kept

Enquiry details are kept only for as long as they are needed to arrange and follow up your appointment, and are then deleted.

The CapeTalk interview

A page on this website features a 2014 CapeTalk interview with Dr Davies. The audio player for this recording is provided by SoundCloud, and it loads only once a visitor presses play. Before that point, your browser makes no connection to SoundCloud. Once you press play, SoundCloud may set its own cookies and process information about your visit under its own privacy policy, which this website does not control.

Directions to the practice

Where this website offers directions to the practice, the link opens Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze, depending on the option you choose. Each of these services works under its own provider’s privacy policy, which this website does not control.

Cookies and measuring visits

This website does not set cookies of its own, and it does not use any tool to measure or track visits. Netlify, which hosts the site, may keep technical records of requests, such as IP addresses, to run and protect its service, under its own privacy policy.

Your rights under POPIA

As a visitor to this website, you have the right to:

  • ask whether this website holds personal information about you, and to access it
  • ask for information to be corrected, destroyed or deleted if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, or was collected unlawfully
  • object, on reasonable grounds, to the processing of your personal information
  • withdraw any consent you have given, at any time
  • complain to the Information Regulator if you believe your information has not been handled properly
