Dr Annabel Davies, dentist at BRS Dental

About Dr Davies

Dr Annabel Davies qualified as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the Royal London Hospital in 1981. She then worked in hospital posts in orthodontics and oral surgery at the Royal London and Middlesex Hospitals, and she spent six years working in a family practice in Ealing, London. She moved to Cape Town with her family in 1990, and she has practised at BRS Dental since 1991.

She is a general dental practitioner, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She is not registered as a specialist. She consults at BRS Dental from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings.

Of her approach to her work, Dr Davies has said: “I treat people the way I would like to be treated myself.”

How she works

Three things guide how Dr Davies sees patients.

She takes her time. Appointments are not rushed, and a patient who is nervous can set the pace of the visit.

She explains before she begins. A patient hears what she has found, what the choices are, and what each choice involves, before any treatment starts.

She sees people in pain as quickly as she can. A patient who is in pain is asked to say so when they call, so that this can be taken into account when the appointment is arranged.

These describe her general approach rather than a promise about any particular appointment, which depends on the practice’s diary on the day.

A radio interview in 2014

Dr Davies was interviewed by Pippa Hudson for CapeTalk’s Health and Wellness segment, broadcast by Primedia Broadcasting. The recording, titled “Pippa Hudson: Talking to Dr Annabel Davies”, runs for just under 24 minutes and is still available to listen to on SoundCloud. The recording was published on 24 January 2014. Because of its age, anything said in it may no longer reflect current practice or current clinical guidance, so it is shared here as a record of the interview rather than as current advice.
